Public Speaking in the new year...
It is so great to be back at school and spending time with your students! We have some fun stuff going on in Public Speaking.
Grades 1-2 are doing a Wax Museum in class. Notes came home with your student on Monday regarding who they have chosen, the book they were looking at in class, and what they will need help with at home. Feel free to select another book if you find one you like better. And, if your child would like to change people, that's okay too. All I ask is that they represent a person from history who has contributed something worthwhile to the world. We will be preparing our stories next Monday, so they need to bring their book to class with them. This is a rather lengthy project, so we will use our Public Speaking and Writing classes to prepare over the next couple of weeks.
Grades 3-5 are working on persuasive speeches. Students selected their topics in class on Monday, and need to be researching / thinking about what they'd like to share with the class. Speeches need to be 3-5 minutes in length. We will be preparing speeches in class next Monday, so they need to bring research materials with them. I expect that we might even begin giving speeches during the second half of class on Monday.
Grades 6-8 are going to debate. We will have teams of 2, so there will be a total of 2 debates in our class - one for students to participate in, another for students to observe. We are still working to narrow down our two debate topics and determine teams. Since preparing for debate takes a considerable amount of effort, we will use some of our Writing class periods too. (They will be practicing the art of researching, note taking, and outlining!)
