Demonstration Speeches

We had quite a day in Public Speaking yesterday!  Were the kids as exhausted as I was after school?

We heard from three speakers in 6th - 8th grades.  The Amazing Justen and the Amazing Corban teamed up to demonstrate some magic - and broke the cardinal rule to never reveal the trick.   I now know how to force a card on someone and levitate another person.  Wes taught us a lot about skate boards.  He showed us how to build one, demonstrated the tools and how they work, discussed options for personalizing a board, and slowly walked us through a trick.

We watched three demonstrations in 3rd-5th grades.  Josh taught the class the basics of bass guitar, its place in a band, the golden rule about touching another musician's instrument without permission (DON'T), and then gave the class a quick lesson in playing Trading My Sorrows.  It was really fun to watch the class sing along a little.  After jamming, we made our way into the kitchen where chefs Ben and Chelsie cooked for us.  Ben made scrambled eggs.  He helped us determine how many eggs we'd need per person for a meal, carefully demonstrated how to crack and whip the eggs, and shared the trick for getting fluffy eggs.  He also detailed the many different ingredients one can add to scrambled eggs.  Surprisingly, we have a few friends who like them with spinach.  Chelsie wrapped the day up with delicious sloppy joes.  Unfortunately, we had a little mishap with the burner not warming properly, but Chelsie filled the time (five minutes) flawlessly!  She discussed every aspect of browning the ground beef, what temperature to set the stove to and what type of pan to use.  She even went over the ingredients that were in her sloppy joe sauce.

All of the speakers were comfortably in their element and having a great time, which made every one of their demonstrations very enjoyable.  We learned a lot about very interesting and diverse topics, and the food was fantastic.  GREAT JOB, KIDS!

1st and 2nd grades had heard all about what their older siblings were doing, and they wanted to get in on the action.  We spent our class time yesterday deciding what each student would demonstrate and, as a class, we helped each speaker figure out how to put their presentation together.  In their backpacks, you will find a handwritten sheet detailing what your student has chosen to do, and how they'd like to do it.  1st and 2nd grades will begin giving their demonstration speeches next Monday, October 24.

Bayleigh - make paint
Luke - make a bean burrito
Eli - breakdance
Austyn - build a Lego Star Wars ship
Noah - build a Bionicle Hero Factory
Jacob - magic

These speeches are so much fun!  I'm really looking forward to next Monday.

**Students are welcome to drop all of their supplies off in my classroom before school - that way they won't have to lug everything around with them from class to class.
