History Assignment!

Your student(s) should have come home with a history assignment yesterday that they will need your help with.  IT IS DUE THIS WEDNESDAY!  We are visiting New Zealand this week and are learning about the native people, the Maori.  They had a very long, formal process of introducing themselves to each other.  That's what we are going to do with the information on the sheet I sent home.  They should be able to tell you the difference between #2 and #3. #2 is where they were raised.  #3 is where they were born.  We discussed they may be the same.  We also discussed that some siblings info might be different because the family has moved.

We are also going to play a game with Oreos to help explain what it was like when the Maori realized that they were tricked when they signed the treaty with Great Britain.  Some jaws are probably going to hit the floor!

Remember, next week is NOT a test week.  We will be going to California and discussing the Gold Rush.  The following week will be a test week over Ch. 40-42.

General Science

Sorry I intended to get this out yesterday and never got around to posting it.

The 7th and 8th graders are supposed to finish up reading module 14 if they haven't already and then do either the study guides or OYO questions for Module 13 and 14 in preparation for Monday's activity we are doing. I want them to be prepared to participate in the game so they will have to be able to answer questions!

Thank you,
Cassity

Zoology 2

Parents I'm sure you have noticed your child hasn't had science homework in quite a while.  I decided to have them finish their journals in class because we are so far ahead!  So it has been my challenge to keep them all at the same pace.  I'd like to give you an idea of what will be in our near future.  We will finish lesson 13 book work hopefully today and do the experiment on Monday.  I will need someone to bring plastic water bottles.  I am in need of 4, so if you have one around the house it would be helpful if you sent it to MOEC on Monday.   On Wed. we will then be working on the final exam, Together, So don't do this at home.  The following week we will seperate into two teams and play a jeopardy game. Monday the 29th we will begin our Semester Assignment.  All students that have a JNJ are being ask to bring a book about aquatics.  They will be giving a narration of the book, using it as a prop.  So they will need to have read the book.  If it is a really thick book they should pick a topic out of it that they particularly enjoyed and speak about that.  They are not going to be reading word for word this will be more of a discussion led by that student.  The students with an NJ have already been divided into partners and will need to work with their partner over the next few weeks to put together a speech about a chosen topic.  They need to have equal parts in the speech and props or visuals are preferred!  The are suppose to be picking topics today.  This is how we will be ending our year.

Thanks,
Melissa

First grade parents...

For parents of first graders who are wondering what their child will be learning next year in second grade.. Here it is. We have a teacher ready to love on your children. If you haven't heard yet we are keeping 2nd grade out of the rotation. From now on k-2 will have their own teacher and 3-8 will be in the rotation.

We will be doing Apologia Zoology 2 swimming creatures in the second grade class. It is my understanding that the second grade will always do Zoology 2 and then when they move to the rotation they will be doing whatever the science is for that year.

The other main enrichment will be Expedition Earth. It is a very neat curriculum from www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com. There is enough to do this 5 days a week which we obviously won't be doing so Mrs. Catlett will keep you informed on what is being covered in case you want to follow along at home. It is only $15 if you want to download it. ** Expedition Earth could easily go along with My Fathers World Exploring Countries and Cultures.  I know some of you use MFW as your at home curriculum so if you wanted to do Countries and Cultures next year in their second grade year it should go along well with it.  Of course just a suggestion of something to think about.

They will continue with all the specials:art, pe, music, sign language and will be doing writing, public speaking, math enrichment, reading comprehension as time allows.

We just wanted to inform you all as you are thinking about next years curriculum or even browsing if you are going to the conference.

The End of History!

Not really...history is made everyday!

We are coming to the end of Book 3, we only have 3 chapters left.
After taking the test Monday, we will work on finishing our Native American bags this Wed.

Then, next week we will visit Texas and experience the Alamo!  From there we will spend a week in New Zealand, and end back in the United States and follow the gold to California and the Gold Rush.

We are going to complete the last 3 chapters, then take a test over all 3 chapters.  The last week we will sum up the year with a great game of History Jeopardy, which the kids love to play.

We have been building all year to the beginning of the Civil War.  We will get there next year.  This is a great place in History to end the year, it makes me totally excited to get going again next year!

2nd grade - Author's Party

Second graders have been working on a very special project this semester.  We are almost finished and are so excited to share them with our classmates and families at our Author's Party.  These projects are an early Father's Day gift, so if Dad could make it to the Author's Party, that would be an extra special treat!

Author's Party
Wednesday, May 1
8:45am - 10:25am

The kids would like to provide treats - juice, desserts, fruit, etc - and have asked if they could bring these treats themselves.  Not everyone needs to bring something, but if you (or your child) would like to provide something, let the class know.  We don't need much, as we'll be between breakfast and lunch, but what's a party without food?

***If Mom or Dad is only able to be there for a short time, please let me know and I'll schedule your Author around your availability.

As always, thank you for sharing your kids with me.  They are some of the most amazing people I've ever met!
