Penguins/First Graders

This week we are reading the book Albert.  We are discussing birds in the Bible and how Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice.  Our character study is sacrifice.  The state for this week is Illinois.  Our show and tell for Wednesday is birds.  Kind of like we did last week; pick a bird, any bird and tell us 3-5 things about that bird: normal areas it's found, habitat, a picture or description, predators, what do the eggs look like, etc.  Wikipedia says there are over 10,000 species of birds from the tiny Bee Hummingbird to the large ostrich.  Have fun picking just one!

First Grade/Penguins

Last week was Gullywasher/Jesus is our refuge in times of trouble.  God speaks through the thunder and shows His power in the storms.

This week is Andy and the Lion / Jesus is Servant to All.  Character study: kindness/service; State: Missouri  (the story does not take place in a particular state.  I chose MO as we transition from the SW states toward the east in geography.)

Our show and tell is about large breed wild cats ie: bobcat, cheetah, cougar, jaguar, leopard, lion, lynx, tiger and many more.  Please help your child choose one and tell us a few, 3-5 things about it: origin, habitat, food source, what makes it different from other wild cats, etc. Here's one of many sites I found:
http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/agarman/bco/species.htm and wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae  If they have a stuffed animal and/or a picture to help us visualize the animal, even better ; )

Please remember that tomorrow is pizza day and that there will be cookies and brownies for sale to support cancer $0.25 each.

Blessings to you in your homeschooling this week!

First Graders -- Penguins
This past week we learned about Jesus is our Rock; we build our lives on Him.  We read the story Roxaboxen and played games with our rocks, sorted our rocks and weighed our rocks.  We also are working on memorizing the 10 commandments.

This next week we are reading Gullywasher that takes place in the SW United States.  We will be learning about New Mexico and learning a few Spanish words that are in our story.  For our Bible lesson we will learn about Jesus calming the storm and that we can have faith in Him to protect us: God is our shelter in times of trouble.  Our show and tell for Wednesday will be about handling fear.  Help them to think about what or who comforts them in times of fear and what they can do to face their fears.  They could also discuss a time they were afraid and how they handled it, if they would like. Science is storms.

Hope that you are having a great weekend.

First Grade/Penguins

God is a God of order; we were created to work
We read Truman's Aunt Farm last week and discussed homonyms: words that sound the same but are spelled differently aunt/ant; to/two/too et al.  We also covered animal classification, their characteristics and habitats: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.  We looked at the 100 chart and found patterns.

God cannot lie; we can trust Him and His word
This week we will be reading the book Mailing May and learning about Idaho.  We will discuss being trustworthy and patient.  We will cover telling time and we will weigh different objects with different types of scales.  We will also discuss the post office, mail, and we will learn how to address an envelope.  It would be helpful if they know their address.
Show and Tell this week is: Mom
Please bring/send a picture of mom and tell us 3-5 facts about her.
Monday is Cali and Sammi's birthday so we will have treats.

Next week (Sept. 17 & 19) Show and tell is your family's emergency plan for a storm.  Also, if you have a rock that has been collected from someplace special (or any rock that will fit in their palm), please send it on Monday--Jesus is our rock and we build our house on that rock.  Please no big rocks.
Looking forward to another great week!
Blessings,
Cindy

Jesus is our Hope!
Our FIAR book this week is "Amber on the Mountain" about a girl who lives an isolated life in the mountains and with determination learns to read so she won't feel so alone.  Monday we also worked on place value: ones, tens, and hundreds and played a game identifying those places on index cards with numbers.  We also learned about mountain life and oxygen in higher altitudes:  breathing in oxygen and out carbon dioxide!  Then we poured air from one glass to another under water.  At least a water mess is easy to clean up!  Then we worked on sight words.

Oh and we learned some interesting facts about penguins.  Ask them how tall an emperor penguin can get.  They also really enjoy wiggling and jumping to the music of the Go Fish guys.

Wednesday we will discuss friendship and the Friend who sticks closer than a brother, review place values, weigh air and play a game with sight words.
show and tell tomorrow: favorite book
They may bring their favorite book and tell us a few things about it or they may just tell us about their favorite book : think short summary and why they chose it.
I think we've been having a great time !
Many blessings and enjoy the long weekend,
Cindy

week 2

The first graders had a busy week.  We read Three Names by Patricia MacLachlan, about a boy and his dog who travel to a one room school house on the prairie.  We learned about Jesus as the living water, did a science experiment, measured things in church, talked about our pets and we voted on a name.  We're the Penguins! and we waddle to different activities.  We also talked about being teachable and humble NOT prideful because we already know "stuff"  (A good reminder).

Next week it's Amber on the Mountain by Tony Johnston and show and tell: their favorite book and they can bring it to class if they want to show us.  Cindy Q (the head penguin)
