Before I get on with what's been going on in History, it is time turn in the flour and salt I mentioned at the beginning of the year for the Salt Maps. Please turn in one cup of salt and one cup of flour PER STUDENT. Please turn them in to me either this week (I know it is short notice, but some might be ready), or the week following Thanksgiving. It is for our activity the week of Dec. 3rd. Mark their names on them so I can pass them out to the correct students. Thanks.
2 Weeks ago we visited St. Domingue, which is now Haiti. We witnessed their freedom from the French and from slavery. Our project for the week was making our own palm tree stamps. The palm tree was the symbol the first ruler Jacque I, an ex-slave. He chose the palm tree to stand for unity and strength.
Last week we returned to England and the United States for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. We discussed the end of the green fields and cottages and the beginning of the smoke stacks and factories. We talked about how horrible the conditions were and the effects on the children who had to work in the factories. I had a blast wit the activity of the week. The students were my factory workers. They each had a job in making cookies and had to perform the same job over and over. They were earning their wages cookies. I was the overseer. If they talked to each other, complained, or laughed they lost a cookie. Let's just say it was very quiet in my class last week. :-)
This week is a test week. Please quiz your students over their review. Empty Purple folders are due back tomorrow. I will return graded tests the week after Thanksgiving.
Next we will go exploring with Lewis and Clark and then we will see the fall of Napoleon and study the War of 1812.
Have a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving. I am so thankful for your children.
