Demonstration speeches - rehearsal updates

All classes began rehearsing their demonstration speeches today.  Not everyone was able to rehearse today, so we'll rehearse again on Wednesday...  At this point, we are shooting for MONDAY as our first demonstration speech day, but if we're not ready, we will delay for another school day.  I'm thinking that we will probably take four school days to get through all of our demonstration speeches.  Parents are welcome to come on their child's demonstration day, so please let me know if a Monday or Wednesday better suits your schedule and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Parents, please touch base with your student to see how you can help them to feel better prepared.  In some cases, I honestly do not know what the steps are to their demonstration, so there's little I can do to help direct what should come next.
.
Here are notes I have regarding some of today's practices.  If nothing stood out or changed, there might not be anything noted for your student's speech - if you have questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

2nd grade:

Tori, Allie and Bayleigh - demonstrating their drawing and speaking in front of the group comes pretty easily for them, so I have asked them to do some additional research about their animal/plants, so that they can incorporate some information in with their drawing tutorial.  (What is their animal/plant's habitat, what do they eat, etc.?  Anything interesting that would nicely compliment their drawing.)

Sophie has changed her topic to making a beaded necklace.  She worked to write her steps out, but did not get to practice.
Shopping list:  Beads and string
Steps:  1. Tie a knot on the end.  2. Put the beads on the string.  3. Tie a knot on the front.  4. Then tie it on your neck.

Elizabeth:
Drawing a lady bug from memory (does not require notes).  Elizabeth does great at drawing.  She and I spent time today practicing facing the audience and using her loud voice.  Continued practice at home will help with this.

Austyn:
Needs to bring sunglasses and maybe a broken down cardboard box to spin on.
Moves he's going to demonstrate:  a spin where he starts out sitting on his bottom and swings his legs under his arms, the Robot, Moonwalk, Sprinkler, back spin, backwards somersault and a full body spin.  He just need to practice his dance moves at home and narrow it down to the ones he feels most comfortable with.

Colter:
Needs to do as much pre-building work on his pinewood derby car as is necessary, while creating a list of the specific steps that he did at home so he can explain it to the class.  Then he can demonstrate the finishing touches on it in class.

Lucy:
Felt like she'd done all the preparation work that she could, but was uncomfortable practicing in front of her class.  I think Lucy will really benefit from practicing at home with Mom and Dad, as that will give her the confidence she needs to do it in class.

Jacob:
Settled on ice cream for his topic, but did not have his recipe in class today.  If he brings his recipe on Wednesday, he will be able to rehearse in front of the class.  Additionally, practicing at home will help him to feel prepared and be well aware of what he needs to bring with him on demonstration day.

Brady:
Topic is making chocolate pudding.
Worked on the beginnings of his shopping list today (the same list as Jack).  He will rehearse his speech on Wednesday.

3rd & 4th grade:

Luke:
Giving speech next Monday to accommodate Dad's availability.  Did not rehearse today...working with Mom and Dad later this week.

Lance:
His rehearsal time really helped him to elaborate on his speech.  Practicing at home would go a long way in helping him to fine tune it (I'm sure Dad knows a lot more about fishing than I do).
To bring:  Catfish pole, regular pole, catfish weights, regular weights, catfish bait (stink bait and another he couldn't remember the name of), regular bait, bobber for regular pole.
Demonstrate:  Differences between the two poles, explain why a regular pole won't work for catfish fishing, how to put bobber on regular pole, how to string bait on each pole, explain why you need different bait for different fishing, explain why no bobber on catfish pole.

Morgan:
Settled on a new topic - duct tape bracelets.
Shopping list:  Duct tape, scissors, paper, markers, cups
Didn't get to list her steps, so she'll need to practice at home and write it out as she goes along.  She will get to rehearse in class on Wednesday.  Practicing at home will help her a lot as she gives her speech over and over again and settles on exactly what she wants to say/do.

Lillian:
Changed her topic to peanut butter cookies and wrote out her ingredients.  Since she has the recipe with her, I won't type it all out here...  Lilly needs to practice at home - just getting comfortable with making cookies and explaining the steps at the same time.  She will get to rehearse in class on Wednesday.

Austin:
He settled on walking his class through how to make marshmallow shooters.  He is actually going to give everyone the supplies to make their own and take them through it step-by-step.  He will need materials for 16 people - cups, balloons, marshmallows.
Steps:  1. Get the supplies.  2. Put a cup on another cup.  3. Cut half off the cup.  4. Put a balloon on the top of the cup.  5. Load the marshmallow.  6.  Have fun!

Connor L:
Looked like Connor was making a lot of progress on his speech.  We discussed showing the class what a golf shoe looks like, discussing appropriate golf attire, then explaining what different golf clubs are used for.  We discussed showing the class how to tee up a ball, hit with a driver, and putt.  We talked about how he could put paper "holes" on the floor to demonstrate putting.  Connor took his paper home with him.

Connor B:
Changed his topic to making a paper block.  He will rehearse his demonstration on Wednesday.  Said that he knew it all from memory.

Joey/Eli/Josh:
Making scrambled eggs.  Joey is going to have Eden rearrange their instructions so that each boy has a part.  Eli will do the intro where he discusses the necessary ingredients and heats the pan.  Joey is going to mix the eggs.  Josh is going to do the cooking.  Joey, please bring 3 copies of the printed instructions on Wednesday so that everyone in the group can take them home to practice.

Brady/Noah:
Need to bring their magic tricks to school for rehearsal on Wednesday.

5th / 6th grades:

Brooke & Carson:
Changed their topic to baking sugar cookies.  Planning to get together to practice tomorrow, so they should be able to rehearse on Wednesday.

Ben/Ben/Selah:
Rehearsed today.  Each of them need to practice their respective tricks at home so that they work more smoothly on demonstration day.
