The next few weeks in History

This week we visited Russia and discussed Catherine the Great.  I don't know who is enjoying this stuff more, them or me.  It was another exciting week where we saw history repeating itself.  I love being able to make connections with the kids about past rulers we have studied.

Wed. we completed our map work and looked at a famous piece of work from a cartoonist in the late 1700's, James Gillray.  His piece was concerning the fear that people were feeling when Edward Jenner created a vaccination for smallpox.  So, when you see this cartoonist's work come home in the purple folders in a few weeks, be warned!  It was making a good point for how people felt back then as something new was introduced to them, something we see as very silly today because it is so common.  We also played a game, The Next Czar of Russia.  This was a fun game that quizzed the kids on what we learned this week and it helped drive home the point that Catherine had to keep four sets of people happy during her reign to secure her throne.  That times had changed with the recent revolts.

This next week we will visit Great Britain and the Untited States where we will be looking at inventions of this time that changed history.  We will be making examples of a cotton gin, so thank you to everyone for getting your shoe box and paper towel rolls in.  Everyone will get to bring these home!!

Then we will be back to a test week!  We will review on that Mon., and test on that Wed.

Have a great weekend- enjoy the beautiful weather!
