Parent Letter

Welcome to History at Mighty Oaks Enrichment Center!

If at any time you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at barryfam4@yahoo.com.

First of all, I want you to know that I love teaching!  Second of all, I love teaching HISTORY!!

We will be learning from Story of the World Book 3.  Last year we covered the information in chapters 1-23.  This year we will finish Book 3 and cover the material in chapters 24-42.

The first week we will spend some time reviewing chapters 1-23, but this will be just a general review.  If you have a copy of the book, it would be very beneficial to read these chapters if your student is new to MOEC.  This is not required, but would help your student.

On Mondays we will read the stories from the current chapter.  We stop throughout the stories and mark our class world map, we discuss what is really happening and try to make connections from previous chapters, and make a class outline for each chapter.  Believe it or not, this takes our entire time!  Second grade will also complete a coloring sheet.

On Wednesdays we will complete various hands-on activities that deal with the information covered in the chapter.  Sometimes we will be cooking, sometimes we might sew, and we will also work with clay and several other art mediums.  We will cover some math, science, and language arts as well.  They are fun activities that help us understand what was going on during that time in history.  There will be some times that students will be bringing projects home, sometimes I will want to hold on to them for the open house, and a lot of the time the projects will be done in groups and not able to come home.

On testing weeks, Mondays will be a review, usually in some form of a game.  There should be a review sheet to help them study on their own coming home that day.  On Wednesdays of testing weeks, the students will take a test.  I will grade and return the tests on the following Monday.  Look for these to come home in their History folder.  Students will be rewarded for bringing back their folders to the NEXT class session.  I will hold onto folders between tests.

At the end of the semester, there will be an end of semester review and test.  Again, there will be a study guide and time in class where we will have reviewed the information covered.  Your students should be very prepared!

I am very excited about all that we are covering this year in History.  It was such an amazing time in history.  We are going to have a great time and I prayerfully hope your kids will leave having a lifelong love for History!
