Public speaking

Coming up next week...

1st & 2nd grade will have Show & Tell on Monday.  Please bring an item you are THANKFUL for.

3rd - 5th grades are working on their Wax Museum.  The Wax Museum will be a part of our Christmas open house on Dec. 15.  Students need to choose a person who has made a notable contribution to the world, gather some general biographical information (birth, death, married, children, lived where, known for, etc...), find an interesting story to share in a 2-3 minute presentation, and come up with a costume.

Next week, students will begin researching, organizing and memorizing their presentations (ex:  Ben Franklin and the key kite, or George Washington and the cherry tree).  We have class time to work on this, but students must bring reading materials with them so that class time is used effectively.  PLEASE BRING BOOKS AND ARTICLES TO SCHOOL WITH YOU ON MONDAY.

We have 14 students participating in the Wax Museum, and I'd like to have 14 different people represented (or at least 14 unique STORIES).  Following is a list of characters so far:

Josh Fairman - Charles II
Riley - George Washington
Ben - Abraham Lincoln
Levi - George Mueller
Evan - Ben Franklin
Micah - Henry Ford
Jaxen - Jesus
Hudson - J. Hudson Taylor

Some other ideas - Martin Luther King, Jr, William Brewster, Rosa Parks, Betsy Ross, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Judy Blume, Bach, Mozart, Beethovan, Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein, person from the Bible, etc.

*Please help guide your student in selecting a person for the Wax Museum who is connected in some way to a class at Mighty Oaks - Bible, Science, History, Art, PE, Writing or Public Speaking.

As our preparation moves along, students will create a poster for all of their biographical information (will need a sheet of poster board, markers, scissors, glue, photo of person, etc) and come up with a costume to wear the night of the Wax Museum.

6th - 8th grades are working on persuasive speeches.  A few students selected topics in class on Monday, the rest need to settle on a topic over the weekend.  We will use class time on Monday to research and prepare for our speeches, so STUDENTS NEED TO BRING BOOKS AND ARTICLES WITH THEM TO CLAS.  Since the topics should be something students already hold an opinion on, I expect their need to research to be minimal - I would imagine primarily just statistics.

Justen - Smoking
Madi - Healthy eating
Wes - Swearing

I'm looking forward to Monday.  It is sure to be hectic with each class doing something completely different, but I'm excited to see what the students come up with!
